There are plenty of family-friendly hotels in Amsterdam. The real challenge is finding one that fits both your family and your budget. Because let’s be honest, staying in Amsterdam isn’t cheap.
During our visits to Amsterdam, we’ve learned that a hotel’s location often matters less than many people think. Thanks to the city’s excellent public transportation network, you can usually reach Amsterdam’s main attractions just as quickly from Amsterdam Noord, Oost, Zuid or the Amstel area as you can from the city center. And that can make a big difference when it comes to accommodation prices.
In this guide, we share our favorite family-friendly hotels in Amsterdam. From affordable budget hotels and spacious apartments to more luxurious stays and unique accommodations where the overnight stay becomes part of the adventure itself.

What to Look for When Choosing a Family Hotel in Amsterdam
Booking a hotel in Amsterdam may seem straightforward, but there are a few things we always pay attention to. When you’re traveling with kids, a little extra planning can make your city trip much smoother.
Family Rooms Are Not Always Guaranteed
Hotel rooms in Amsterdam are often smaller than you might expect. As a result, family rooms can be limited and sometimes surprisingly expensive. Always check how many people are allowed in a room and whether there’s enough space for a crib or an extra bed.
Stay in the City Center or Outside It?
Many visitors assume they need to stay right in the heart of Amsterdam. We see things a little differently. Amsterdam’s public transportation system is excellent, and neighborhoods such as Amsterdam Noord, Oost, Zuid and Amstel are often only 15 to 20 minutes away from the city’s main attractions. Choosing a hotel outside the center can save you a significant amount of money without adding much extra travel time.
Parking Can Add Up Quickly
Traveling to Amsterdam by car? Be sure to check parking costs before booking your accommodation. Parking fees in and around the city center can be surprisingly high. Hotels outside the center often offer more affordable parking options and some even have their own parking facilities. That can easily save you dozens of euros per day.

Our Favorite Family-Friendly Hotels in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is certainly not the cheapest city when it comes to accommodation, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Fortunately, there are plenty of great options to choose from. Ranging from affordable hotels and spacious apartments to unique places where the overnight stay becomes part of the experience.
Over the years, we’ve stayed in several different parts of Amsterdam, including MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam Amstel, Volkshotel and Conscious Hotel Vondelpark. One thing we’ve learned is that location often matters less than many people think. Thanks to Amsterdam’s excellent public transportation system, many neighborhoods are surprisingly well connected to the city’s main attractions.
Based on our own experiences, extensive research and hundreds of guest reviews, we’ve selected the accommodations we believe offer the best options for families. These are our favorite family-friendly hotels in Amsterdam.

Which Neighborhood Is Best for Staying in Amsterdam With Kids?
When booking a hotel in Amsterdam, many people immediately focus on the city center. That’s completely understandable. It seems like the easiest way to stay close to everything. However, we wouldn’t make location your only deciding factor.
Amsterdam has an excellent public transportation network. Metro lines, trams, buses and even free ferries connect nearly every part of the city. Because of that, we often find the hotel itself more important than the exact neighborhood.
When choosing accommodation, we first look at things like family rooms, parking options and whether the hotel suits our travel style. Only after that do we consider the location. As long as there’s a metro or tram stop nearby, you’ll usually be able to reach Amsterdam’s main attractions quickly and easily.

Staying in Amsterdam City Center With Kids
The city center is, of course, a convenient place to stay. You’ll be within walking distance of Dam Square, the canals and many of Amsterdam’s most famous attractions. That said, it’s not necessarily where we would choose to stay as a family. Hotel prices are generally higher, rooms tend to be smaller and you’ll often still find yourself using trams, metros or ferries to reach neighborhoods such as De Pijp, Amsterdam Noord or Museumplein.
For a first visit to Amsterdam, the city center is a perfectly good option. But families may find better value and more space elsewhere in the city.
Stay in the Trendy Neighborhood De Pijp With Kids
If we had to choose a favorite neighborhood in Amsterdam, De Pijp would be near the top of our list. There’s always something happening here. You’ll find the famous Albert Cuyp Market, great restaurants, lively terraces and the green spaces of Sarphatipark. At the same time, it still feels like a neighborhood where locals actually live and spend their time.
That’s exactly why we enjoy De Pijp so much. It feels more authentic and less touristy than many parts of the city center, while still offering excellent connections to the rest of Amsterdam by metro and tram.

Stay in Amsterdam Oost and the Amstel Area With Kids
Amsterdam Oost and the Amstel area are probably our favorite places to stay in the city. This is where you’ll find hotels such as Volkshotel and MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam Amstel, two accommodations we’ve personally enjoyed during our visits to Amsterdam. One of the biggest advantages of this area is value for money. Hotels here often offer more space than those in the city center, while the metro can still get you to Amsterdam’s main attractions in just a few minutes. The area is also home to attractions such as NEMO Science Museum, one of our favorite things to do in Amsterdam with kids.
Parking is generally easier here as well, which is a major advantage for families traveling by car.
Stay in Amsterdam Noord With Kids
Amsterdam-Noord is one of the most surprising parts of the city. The atmosphere feels more creative, industrial and alternative than in many other neighborhoods. You’ll find places like the NDSM Wharf, unique cafés, creative workspaces and plenty of interesting places to explore. At the same time, Amsterdam Noord feels noticeably calmer than the city center.
Many visitors assume it’s far away, but that’s not really the case. Thanks to the free ferry and the North/South Metro Line, you can often reach the city center faster than you might expect.
Stay in Amsterdam Zuid With Kids
Amsterdam-Zuid is a great choice if you’re looking for a quieter area to stay. The neighborhood is close to Vondelpark, Museumplein and several convenient tram and metro connections. You’ll also find a good selection of hotels that cater to families.
If you’re looking to combine a city break with a little more space and greenery, Amsterdam Zuid is definitely a neighborhood we would consider.
