If you have to pick one place during your Albania roadtrip that truly feels different from everything else, it’s the Shala River (Lumi i Shalës). This remote river, hidden deep in the mountains and only accessible by boat via Lake Koman, almost feels unreal the moment you arrive.

Crystal-clear blue water, steep rock walls and small beaches along the shore create a setting you would sooner expect in Asia than in Europe. The traditional boats lined up along the water even reminded us a bit of the longtail boats in Thailand. During the day it gets lively with day-trippers, but once the boats leave, everything slows down. That’s when you really understand why so many travelers see this as one of the highlights of their Albania road trip.

In this article, we take you to the Shala River and share our own experience, including practical tips, how to get there and why staying overnight is, in our opinion, a must, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

Why the Shala River Is So Special

On your way to the Shala River, it already feels like you’re discovering a place that not everyone has found yet. Getting there, only possible by boat via Lake Koman, immediately sets it apart from most places in Albania, and honestly, even the rest of Europe.

Once you arrive, you’ll see crystal-clear blue water winding through a narrow gorge, with steep rock walls on both sides and small beaches along the shore. During the day it’s lively with day-trippers, but after 3 PM the last boats leave and everything slows down. The next morning, before the first boats arrive again, it almost feels like you have this place to yourself.

That contrast is exactly what makes the Shala River so special. Stay here for at least one night, and you’ll really understand why this is a highlight of so many Albania roadtrips.

What Makes the Shala River Unique?

  1. Only Accessible by Boat
The journey itself, via Lake Koman, is already an experience and keeps this place remote and untouched.
  2. Crystal-Clear Water and Rugged Nature
The mix of fresh blue water, a narrow gorge and towering mountains creates a landscape you’d expect in Asia rather than Europe.
  3. An Authentic Experience
Evenings by the river, with small campfires and slow moments, give this place a vibe you won’t easily find elsewhere.
  4. Far Away From the Crowds
By staying overnight, you avoid the daytime crowds and get to experience the quiet, remote side of this hidden spot.

How to Get to the Shala River (Lumi i Shalës) in Albania

Getting to the Shala River isn’t straightforward, and that’s exactly what makes this place so special. In all cases, you’ll first travel to Koman, from where you continue by boat across Lake Koman.

There are roughly three ways to do this:

  1. By (Rental) Car (DIY)
You drive to Koman yourself and take the boat from there.
  2. Partly Organized With a Transfer
For example, you’ll be brought from Shkodër to Koman and hop on the boat there.
  3. Fully Organized Day Tour
AllEverything is arranged for you, but you usually won’t stay overnight.

Most travelers choose to rent a car during their Albania roadtrip. Still, it’s not always that simple here, as some rental companies don’t allow driving to Koman. Below, we’ll walk you through what to expect for each option.

Driving to Koman

The most flexible way to visit the Shala River is by (rental) car. Especially if you’re doing a roadtrip through Albania, this is the most logical choice.

The road to Koman has a bit of a reputation. You’ll find plenty of stories online. In reality, we found it manageable. With a regular car, the route is doable as long as you take it slow and keep an eye on the road conditions.

➜ Read our full guide on driving and renting a car in Albania.
➜ Compare rental car prices via DiscoverCars, Booking.com and Sunny Cars.

We drove towards Koman the day before and stayed overnight in Mjedë, so we could catch the first boat in the morning. Looking back, we wouldn’t do that again. There’s not much to do there, and you still have to leave early the next day. Driving straight to Koman and staying there saves you time and avoids unnecessary stress.

➜ Want to stay in Koman? These are great options:

Borealis Guest House: a beautiful spot by the lake.
Lakeview Escape Koman: amazing views and a peaceful setting.
Agroturizem Hotel Vila Franceze: a perfect location for the ferry.

Parking in Koman

If you’re driving to Koman, it’s smart to arrange a proper parking spot in advance. We parked at Blini Parking, a private parking area with a shuttle to the boat departure point. It felt safe and well organized. We even left some of our belongings in the car that we didn’t need during our stay.

Rental Car Restrictions

Not all rental companies allow you to drive to Koman. Parts of the road are unpaved, which can fall outside their insurance coverage.

Our experience? It was easier than expected, but this can differ per company. Always double-check this before booking your car.

If you’re told on the spot that it’s not allowed, or you simply want to avoid the hassle, a transfer or organized tour is a great alternative.

The boat trip to the Shala River

Once we boarded the boat, the real adventure began. The journey through the Koman Valley is unforgettable. Steep mountains rise on both sides of the river, and the scenery feels like something straight out of Thailand.

Transfer From Shkodër and Tirana

Don’t want to take any risks with your rental car, or just not in the mood for hassle? A transfer is a great middle ground.

You can often arrange this through your accommodation, but also locally at booking offices, especially in Shkodër and Tirana. You’ll usually be picked up early in the morning and brought straight to the harbor in Koman.

Prefer to arrange it in advance? You can easily book your transfer online via this website.

Organized Day Tour to the Shala River From Shkodër, Tirana, Durrës or Golem

If you don’t feel like organizing anything yourself, you can join a guided day tour. These usually depart from Shkodër, Tirana, Durrës or Golem. You’ll be picked up, brought to Koman, take the boat and return the same day.

It’s the easiest option, but you’ll have less time at the Shala River and miss the quiet moments in the evening and early morning. And honestly, that’s exactly what makes this place so special.

The Boat Trip Across Lake Koman

From Koman, you’ll hop on a boat towards the Shala River. The journey through the Koman Valley takes about 1 to 1.5 hours and is, in our opinion, already one of the highlights of your trip. You’ll cruise between steep mountains, with bright blue water below you, in a boat that feels a bit like the longtail boats in Thailand.

Our boat was scheduled to leave at 9 AM, but ended up departing around 10 AM, pretty typical for Albania. Still, it’s smart to be there on time. On the way back, boats often leave right on schedule at 8 AM. Miss that one, and you’ll have to wait until 3 PM.

What to Expect at the Shala River (Lumi i Shalës)

After about an hour on the boat, you’ll arrive at the Shala River. During the day it can get quite busy with day-trippers, but around 3 PM most boats leave and the whole vibe changes.

From that moment on, it becomes quiet. You mainly hear the sound of the river, and the gorge suddenly feels much more remote. That shift is exactly what makes this place so special. If you stay overnight, you’ll experience that calm not just in the evening, but also the next morning before the first boats arrive again.

We stayed at Guesthouse Zgiboza, a small-scale accommodation a bit further away from the crowds. In the evening, we sat by the campfire while our daughters threw stones into the water and happily entertained themselves. Simple, but exactly what makes this place so enjoyable.

Things to Do at the Shala River (Lumi i Shalës)

  1. Evenings by the Campfire
At the end of the day, local families light small campfires. You sit by the river together with other travelers and locals, no fuss, just a relaxed atmosphere.
  2. Swimming in the Shala River
The water is pretty cold, but a refreshing swim is a must-do. We especially recommend floating through the current on an air mattress or swim ring.
  3. Kayaking on the River
Paddle along the Shala River and discover hidden spots along the shore. Keep in mind that the current can be quite strong at times, so getting back upstream can take some effort. For us, it worked out just fine.

Staying at the Shala River: Is It Worth It?

Many travelers visit the Shala River as a day trip, but in our opinion, that means missing the best part of this place. We stayed here for two nights, and looking back, it was one of the best decisions of our Albania trip.

During the day it can get busy, but once the last boats leave around 3 PM, the atmosphere completely changes. It becomes quiet, the gorge slowly empties out, and all you really hear is the sound of the river. In the evening, you sit by a campfire, look up at the stars and it feels like you’ve stepped away from the rest of the world for a while.

The next morning might be even better. Before 11 AM, it’s still calm and you’ll almost have the river to yourself, before the first boats arrive again.

Our tip: stay at least one night, but ideally two if you have the time.

The Shala River With Kids: Fun for the Whole Family

We visited the Shala River with our daughters, aged 5 and almost 2, and they absolutely loved it. Swimming in the clear, cold water, throwing stones along the shore and sitting by the campfire in the evening, it’s all very simple, but that’s exactly what makes this place so much fun for kids.

In general, the Shala River is doable with children, but it’s not without risks. The river can have a strong current in certain areas, and there are several narrow bridges without railings. Our youngest found those bridges very interesting, a bit too interesting, which meant we had to keep a close eye on her the whole time. Our oldest loved floating along on an air mattress and kayaking together.

At the same time, this is quite a basic destination. Don’t expect high chairs, baby beds or changing facilities, and keep in mind that hygiene standards may be lower than you’re used to. A stroller also isn’t practical here because of the rough terrain.

Our tip: traveling with young kids? This is an amazing experience. With a baby, we’d be a bit more hesitant to recommend it.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Shala River

The Shala River isn’t a destination where everything runs smoothly or predictably. That’s part of the charm, but it also means it’s smart to come prepared. These tips will help you avoid surprises and make the most of your stay.

Preparation and Planning

  • Book Your Boat or Day Tour in Advance
During high season, it can get busy. Arrange your spot ahead of time, for example through your accommodation, to make sure you won’t miss out.
  • Bring Cash
There are no ATMs here. Make sure to bring enough cash, euros are often accepted.
  • Choose a Safe Parking Spot
Driving to Koman? Park at a place like Blini Parking. Avoid the public parking area near the tunnel and don’t leave valuables in your car.

What to Bring?

  • Pack Light
The paths are rocky and uneven, so suitcases aren’t practical. A backpack with your essentials is a must.
  • Swimwear and Water Shoes
The water is cold, but you’ll definitely want to jump in. Water shoes are useful because of the stones.
  • Warm Clothes for the Evening
Once the sun sets, it cools down quickly in the mountains.
  • Snacks and Water
There are a few restaurants and small bars at the Shala River, but options are limited. Bringing your own snacks and water is a good idea, especially when traveling with kids.

Good to Know

  • Best Time to Visit
From May to October. In winter, the Shala River is not accessible.
  • Expect Albanian Timing
Boats don’t always leave on schedule. Go with the flow and embrace it.
  • Family-Friendliness
Great for adventurous families, but it’s a basic destination. Don’t expect many facilities.

Staying overnight at the Shala River really completes the experience. There are only a handful of accommodations directly by the river, so booking in advance is a smart move.
