We love spending time outdoors and exploring nature on foot. Luckily, our children enjoy it too, although they are not always excited about a long walk. That is why we often look for routes that are designed especially for kids. Our favorite family walks are gnome trails, where imagination comes to life through fun surprises along the way, from wooden gnomes to hidden little doors. Limburg is home to several fantastic gnome trails where nature and adventure go hand in hand. At many locations, you can buy a small activity pack at the visitor center, often including a booklet with challenges, a snack and a drink.
These short gnome walks are mainly designed for younger children, but honestly, they are just as much fun for parents and grandparents.
We have rounded up our five favorite gnome trails in Limburg and even included one bonus gnome walk just across the border in Belgium. So grab your gnome hat and get ready for an adventure! 🍄🥾

Gnome Trail De Pelen in De Groote Peel
This is one of our favorite gnome trails in Limburg. Wearing a traditional gnome hat, children can follow this 700-meter trail through De Groote Peel National Park in North Limburg. For €6.50, you can pick up a gnome backpack at Buitencentrum De Pelen filled with materials to help you search for the gnomes along the route. The backpack is yours to keep after the walk. If you prefer, you can also follow the trail without purchasing the backpack.

Along the way, children listen to a story from the gnome activity card and complete six different gnome challenges. Wooden gnome markers guide you through the route, which takes around 45 minutes to complete.
The visitor center also has a small shop, a playground and a kiosk where you can grab a coffee, drink or lunch after your walk.
- Distance: 700 meters
- Price: €6.50 for the gnome backpack
- Address: Moostdijk 15, Ospel
- Stroller and Wheelchair Friendly: Yes, suitable for both strollers and wheelchairs.
Gnome Trail De Meinweg in Herkenbosch
Another fun gnome walk in Limburg can be found in De Meinweg National Park. This family-friendly trail ranges from 500 to 1,500 meters and follows a series of gnome markers through the forest. At the start of the route, a large wooden gnome points children in the right direction.
At Brasserie De Boshut, you can purchase a gnome backpack for €6.50. Inside, you’ll find everything needed for the adventure, including a gnome hat and an activity card with fun challenges along the route. The trail can also be walked for free without the backpack.
After the walk, there is plenty of space for children to play. The area around De Boshut features a play meadow, climbing equipment and a cozy terrace where parents can enjoy a drink or a bite to eat while the kids burn off some energy.
- Distance: 500 to 1,500 meters
- Price: €6.50 for the gnome backpack
- Address: Meinweg 2, Herkenbosch
- Stroller and Wheelchair Friendly: Not ideal. Parts of the route follow unpaved forest paths, making it less suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

Gnome Trail Leudal in Haelen
You can also spot gnomes along the Elisabeth Trail in the beautiful Leudal. This fun walk of about 1 kilometer is perfect for younger children and starts at the parking area of Bezoekerscentrum Leudal. Follow the trail through the forest and enjoy nature while looking for gnomes and other surprises along the way.
What makes this walk especially fun is the variety of natural play elements. Children will cross a boardwalk, explore a barefoot trail and even find a climbing tree. It feels more like a little adventure than a regular walk. The fun continues around the visitor center. Families can explore the herb garden, take a look at the beehives, play with the water pump and splash around in the shallow water area.
- Distance: 1 kilometer
- Price: Free
- Address: Roggelseweg 58, Haelen
- Stroller and Wheelchair Friendly: Yes, suitable for both strollers and wheelchairs.
A Gnome Walk Around Elsloo Castle
At Elsloo Castle, you will find one of the most unique gnome walks in Limburg. Hidden in the forest are dozens of tiny gnome doors attached to trees. Locals often refer to this area as The Mysterious Gnome Houses of Elsloo. What makes it even more special is that nobody knows who created them.

The walk starts at the parking area near the castle. From there, you follow the pond into the forest and climb a staircase made from tree trunks. Once at the top, the real treasure hunt begins. Keep your eyes open, because small gnome doors are hidden throughout the woods. Spotting them feels like discovering a secret world. The route continues past an open grassy field before leading back through the forest and down toward the castle. While this is not an official gnome trail with activity booklets or backpacks, it is one of the most magical family walks in Limburg and a favorite among local families.
- Distance: 2.5 kilometers
- Price: Free
- Address: Maasberg 1, Elsloo
- Stroller and Wheelchair Friendly: Less suitable due to the unpaved paths and staircase. However, part of the route can still be explored with a stroller.

Magical Gnome Forest Walk in Maria-Hoop
One of the most charming gnome walks in Limburg can be found in the small village of Maria-Hoop. This easy forest trail is perfect for younger children and features dozens of gnome figures hidden throughout the woods. Local volunteers have lovingly created all kinds of fun and imaginative scenes, making it feel as if the gnomes really live here.
The route is 1.8 kilometers long and clearly marked with signposts. Along the trail, you’ll find QR codes that children can scan with a smartphone. Each code unlocks a short video in which the gnomes themselves guide visitors along the route and share fun facts about the forest and its inhabitants.
It is a simple concept, but one that works incredibly well. Our kids loved spotting the different gnomes and discovering what surprise was waiting around the next corner.
- Distance: 1.8 kilometers

- Address: Parking Area 1, Waldfeuchterbaan, Maria-Hoop
- Stroller and Wheelchair Friendly: The trail is unpaved but generally accessible for strollers and wheelchairs

Bonus Tip: Pietersheim Gnome Trail in Lanaken (Belgium)
This one is technically not in Limburg in the Netherlands, but just across the border near Maastricht you’ll find Domein Pietersheim, home to one of the most fun gnome walks in the region. This interactive trail is about 3 kilometers long and introduces children to the lives of several gnome families. Along the route, kids are invited to complete games and small challenges while exploring the forest. The trail is easy to follow thanks to information boards, so no map is needed. Highlights include a storytelling tree, colorful gnome houses, a giant soup pot that children can stir themselves and many other playful surprises hidden throughout the forest.
The trail is completely free to visit and is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Dogs are also welcome as long as they remain on a leash.

6 Tips for a Great Gnome Walk in Limburg
- Every Season Is Fun, but Fall Feels Extra Magical
Gnome trails are fun year-round, but there is something special about exploring them in the fall. Colorful leaves, mushrooms and misty forest paths make the whole experience feel even more magical. Don’t forget to bring your camera, as this is the perfect season for memorable family photos. - Pack a Gnome Picnic
Bring along a small picnic and enjoy a break somewhere in the forest. Our kids love carrying their own little backpack filled with snacks and drinks. Add a gnome hat and they will fully embrace the adventure. - Dress for the Weather
Make sure everyone is dressed warmly, especially during the fall and winter months. Waterproof boots are a good idea, as many forest trails can be muddy after rain. A child-sized umbrella can also add a bit of extra fun on wet days. - Collect Natural Materials for a Gnome House
Turn the walk into a creative activity by collecting twigs, moss, leaves and pinecones along the way. Once you get home, you can build a small gnome house together. Who knows, maybe a gnome will move in! - Build Excitement Before the Walk
A fun way to get younger children excited is to read a gnome story before heading out. It helps bring the fantasy world to life and encourages them to look for hidden clues, tiny doors and other surprises during the walk. - Bring Binoculars or a Magnifying Glass
Binoculars and magnifying glasses can make a gnome walk even more exciting. Children can use binoculars to search for hidden gnome houses high in the trees, while a magnifying glass is perfect for taking a closer look at mushrooms, leaves, insects and other small treasures found in the forest.
