White cliffs, bright blue water, and a staircase that eventually makes you think, wait, we still have to climb all the way back up? Welcome to Møns Klint, one of the most impressive natural landmarks in Denmark.
Visiting Møns Klint with kids had been on our bucket list for a while. During our Denmark and Sweden road trip, we finally got the chance to explore it. Even after three weeks on the road, this was one of those places where we looked at each other and thought, we didn’t expect this in Denmark. The landscape feels completely different here, less flat and much more rugged. The views from above are beautiful, but standing at the water’s edge is what really makes an impression.

What Is Møns Klint?
Møns Klint is located on the island of Møn in southeastern Denmark. Here, dramatic white chalk cliffs rise almost straight out of the sea, reaching heights of up to 120 meters (394 feet). Above the cliffs, you can walk through the forest and stop at several viewpoints. Down below, you’ll find yourself standing on a rocky beach with the towering cliffs rising above you.
What makes this place so special is the contrast. Most of Denmark is known for its flat landscapes and gentle scenery, but Møns Klint feels wild and almost un-Danish. It has more in common with the famous chalk cliffs of England or the coastline of northern France than with the landscapes many people associate with Denmark.
The cliffs are made of chalk that formed millions of years ago and contain countless fossils from ancient shells and sea creatures. As parts of the cliffs slowly erode, new fossils are continuously exposed and washed down onto the beach. That makes this one of the best places in Denmark to go fossil hunting, something that children usually love.
Møns Klint is one of Denmark’s best-known natural attractions and is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve network. People come here not only for the views but also for the experience itself. Walking down to the beach, searching for fossils, and standing beneath the cliffs looking up at their sheer size is something you’ll remember long after your visit.
Things to Do at Møns Klint
There are two ways to experience Møns Klint. You can admire the views from the top of the cliffs or head down to the beach at their base. If possible, we recommend doing both.
And if you still have some energy left afterward, the visitor center at the top is worth a stop, especially if you’re visiting Møns Klint with kids.
Enjoy the Viewpoints Above the Cliffs
Even without hiking down to the beach, Møns Klint is impressive. Several viewpoints along the forest trails offer panoramic views of the Baltic Sea. Through the trees, you’ll suddenly catch glimpses of bright blue water, and on a sunny day the colors are incredible.
This is a great option if you’re short on time, visiting with very young children, or simply not in the mood for hundreds of stairs.
Take the Stairs Down to the Beach
If you want the full Møns Klint experience, head down to the beach. Long wooden staircases lead from the forest to the shoreline below. Going down feels fairly easy. Somewhere along the way, though, you’ll probably realize that every step down is a step you’ll have to climb back up later.
Trust us, it’s worth it. From the beach, you really get a sense of how massive the cliffs are. The contrast between the bright white chalk and the deep blue sea is stunning and easily one of the highlights of any Denmark road trip.
Tips for Visiting Møns Klint With Kids:
- A stroller is not practical here.
- A baby carrier is ideal for toddlers and younger children.
- There is already a viewpoint halfway down if you don’t want to descend all the way to the beach.
- Our 6-year-old completed the entire walk on her own.
- Our youngest, who was almost 3, walked parts of the route but spent most of the hike in the carrier.
- Bring plenty of water, especially on warm summer days.
The Beach at Møns Klint
It is only once you reach the beach that you truly realize how tall the cliffs are. The bright white chalk layers, scattered chunks of rock, and crystal-clear water create the iconic scenery that Møns Klint is famous for.
This is not a sandy beach. Instead, you’ll find pebbles and stones covering the shoreline. That makes it less suitable for building sandcastles, but much more exciting for fossil hunting and searching for unique rocks. The sea often displays different shades of blue and turquoise. Because of the white chalk cliffs, the water sometimes seems to glow, especially on sunny days.
Swimming is definitely possible here. During our visit, the water was a little too cold for a proper swim, so we settled for paddling along the shoreline. Plenty of other visitors had no problem jumping right in.
GeoCenter Møns Klint
Near the parking area, you’ll find GeoCenter Møns Klint, the visitor center dedicated to the geology and history of the cliffs. Through interactive exhibits, you can learn how the chalk cliffs were formed and discover what lies hidden beneath the landscape.
It’s a fun addition to your visit, especially if you still have some energy left after exploring the cliffs. Inside, you’ll find educational displays and hands-on activities. Outside, there is a playground for children and access to several forest trails. There’s also a café and restaurant, making it a good place to take a break for lunch, coffee, or a snack.
At the time of our visit, admission was 155 DKK for adults and 100 DKK for children aged 3 to 11. Children under 3 could enter free of charge.
How to Get to Møns Klint
Møns Klint is located about 1.5 hours from Copenhagen and around 2 hours from Odense by car. That makes it an easy addition to a Denmark road trip or even a day trip from Copenhagen.
As soon as you arrive on the island of Møn, the pace noticeably slows down. The highways disappear, replaced by quiet country roads that wind through small villages and open farmland. The final stretch towards the cliffs is narrow, green, and surprisingly scenic, making the drive part of the experience.
Parking at Møns Klint
The main parking area is located next to GeoCenter Møns Klint. During our visit, parking cost approximately 45 DKK (around €6) for the day. From the parking lot, you can easily access the forest trails, viewpoints, and stairways leading down to the beach. You’ll also find restrooms, a café, and a small playground nearby, making it a convenient starting point for your visit.
Where to Eat Near Møns Klint
After climbing all those stairs, you’ll probably be ready for a good meal. We certainly were. There aren’t many restaurants close to Møns Klint, but we ended up at Restaurant Dark Sky at Camp Møns Klint, and it turned out to be a great choice for families.
There are plenty of options on the menu, but after an active day at Møns Klint, we couldn’t resist the pizzas. The restaurant is located on a campground, but it has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. There were children playing everywhere, a large playground, and a relaxed atmosphere. If you’re visiting Møns Klint with kids, it’s a place we’d happily recommend.
Where to Stay Near Møns Klint With Kids
If you’re visiting Møns Klint as part of a Denmark road trip, one night is usually enough. If your itinerary allows it, though, two nights feels much more relaxed. Especially when traveling with children, it’s nice not having to fit everything into a single day.
We stayed at Pension Elmehøj. After several weeks of traveling through Sweden, we were keeping an eye on our budget, so this was a practical choice for us. The property is simple and could use some updates in places, but for a one-night stay it was perfectly fine.

Tip: Møns Klint is especially popular during July and August. The best accommodations often sell out well in advance, particularly family rooms. If you’re traveling during summer, it’s worth booking early to have the most options available.
What Else Is There to Do on Møn?
If you have the time, we highly recommend exploring more of the island. Møn isn’t very large, which is exactly what makes it such a relaxed destination. You can drive from one place to another without spending hours in the car.
Along the way, you’ll pass small beaches, open countryside, and quiet roads where you may hardly see another person. It’s the perfect place to slow down for a day and take a break from a busy road trip itinerary.
Here are a few things worth doing on Møn:
- Visit Stege
Stege is the island’s largest town and definitely worth a stop. We only drove through and honestly regretted not spending more time there. You’ll find colorful houses, a small harbor, and charming streets where you can grab an ice cream or simply wander around for a while. - Go Cycling Through the Countryside
Møn is slightly hilly, which makes cycling here a little more interesting than in many other parts of Denmark. Scenic cycling routes crisscross the island, taking you through forests, farmland, and coastal landscapes. - Discover the Small Beaches
Don’t expect busy beach promenades. Instead, you’ll find quiet stretches of coastline where you can often enjoy the scenery almost entirely to yourself. - Go Stargazing in a Dark Sky Area
Møn is part of an official Dark Sky area, making it one of the best places in Denmark for stargazing. On a clear evening, you’ll be surprised by how many stars you can see, something that’s becoming increasingly rare in much of Europe.
