Visiting Copenhagen and looking for a fun activity for the whole family? Make sure to add the Experimentarium to your list. This interactive museum in Hellerup, just north of the city center, is perfect for a day full of discovering, playing, and learning. Kids explore science, technology, and the natural world in a playful and hands on way. Our daughters, ages five and two, absolutely loved it, from the water tables to the giant soap bubbles.

We visited the museum during our city trip to Copenhagen and it immediately became one of our favorite activities with the kids. In this guide we share our personal experience, floor by floor, plus useful practical tips.

Tip: With the Copenhagen Card the Experimentarium is free. You can also travel there for free by metro or train and get access to more than eighty attractions.

What Is the Experimentarium in Copenhagen?

The Experimentarium is a large science museum where children and adults learn about the world around them through play. Everything can be touched and almost every part is interactive. No boring display cases here, but experiments, bubbles, water play, light, movement, and games.

The museum has several floors, each with its own theme. These themes range from the human body and nature to science experiments and water or bubble play. There is something fun for every age, from simple activities to more detailed experiments. Information is available in Danish and English, but most activities are easy to understand without reading. Our girls ran from one experiment to the next and we followed with big smiles.

What To Expect at the Experimentarium, Floor by Floor

The Miniverse: Playful Learning for the Youngest Visitors

On the ground floor you will find a special exhibition for children ages one to five. This is exactly the age of our two daughters, so we started here. As soon as we walked in we felt excited. It looks very inviting, with different themed corners that encourage kids to play and explore. Children can:

  • Take an X ray of a teddy bear
  • Make autumn leaves swirl in a wind machine
  • Harvest vegetables on the farm
  • Play with dress up stations and mini labs

This floor is clearly designed from a child’s perspective and is a fun way to start your visit.

First Floor: Water Play and Science Experiments

On this floor, called The Beach, the real water fun begins. It is a kind of water playground with tables, currents, wave machines, and channels to experiment with. We built dams and even had a super fun duck race together.

You will also find plenty of science activities about the human body, energy, and transport. One of the highlights is a large ball machine where you help move goods from one country to another.

Second Floor: Discover the Bubblearium and Play at the Construction Site

The highlight of the second floor for us was the Bubblearium. Here you discover everything you can do with foam and bubbles. There are straws for blowing bubbles and a big ring that lets you create a giant bubble around yourself. A staff member taught our oldest daughter a few fun bubble tricks, which she absolutely loved.

At the Construction Site our girls also had a great time. On this play area you feel like a real builder. You move balls from one spot to another using wheelbarrows and different machines.

Other things on this floor:

  • Labyrinth of Light: play with light and color
  • Biosphere: try out what it feels like to use a VR headset

Experimentarium Rooftop: Fun on the Roof

Because of the weather we did not stay long, but on sunny days this is a perfect place to end your visit. There are large building blocks, space to run around, and a nice view. In summer you can easily spend another hour here.
