Ask any local in Albania about a place full of history and pride, and chances are they will say Krujë. This little hilltop town was once the heart of resistance against the Ottomans, and you can still feel that when wandering the old bazaar or looking out from the castle.

We visited Krujë after our stay in Himarë, on our way north. We stayed for one night, just enough to soak up the atmosphere, see the highlights, and avoid the daytime crowds. A short stop, but definitely worth it.

The Best Things To Do in Krujë, Albania

We only had a short time in Krujë, but made the most of it. These were our favorite spots to explore:

Stroll Through the Bazaar of Krujë: 400 Years Old and Full of Character

The old bazaar is without doubt the most charming part of Krujë. This market street has been around for more than 400 years and still carries that old vibe. You walk past small wooden shops with handmade souvenirs, colorful carpets, and local crafts, some prettier than others.

Our daughters loved wandering through the stalls, and we as adults enjoyed it just as much. The atmosphere is relaxed and the locals were incredibly friendly. They joked around with our kids, pulled funny faces, and even handed them little treats. It made the whole experience extra fun.

It is also the perfect spot to pick up a souvenir from your trip to Albania. And while you are there, grab an ice cream at Akullore Kruje, in our opinion one of the best in the country.

Visit Krujë Castle

At the end of the bazaar you walk straight onto the castle grounds. This historic fortress sits on top of the hill and offers amazing views of the surroundings. On a clear day you can even see all the way to Tirana.

Inside the castle you will also find the Skanderbeg Museum, dedicated to Albania’s national hero. We skipped it this time because it was very hot and our daughters were eager to dive into the pool, but if you are into history this is definitely worth a visit.

The castle grounds are free to enter 24/7, so you can also explore early in the morning or later in the evening when it is quieter.

Where To Stay in Krujë

We stayed at Hotel Panorama Kruje, and it was a great choice. Probably the biggest hotel of our Albania trip, but it had everything we needed:

  • A rooftop pool
  • A large breakfast buffet
  • A top location, right at the start of the bazaar
  • Its own parking garage

Everything is within walking distance, and from the rooftop terrace you get beautiful views over the mountains and the town.

It is also smart to spend one night in Krujë instead of just a day trip. Between 10 AM and 4 PM the town often gets packed with buses full of tourists from Tirana. By staying overnight you can enjoy the bazaar and the castle in peace, early in the morning or in the evening.

Note: this is a popular hotel, so make sure to book early if you want to stay here.

How To Get to Krujë, Albania

Krujë ligt op ongeveer 45-minute drive from Tirana and easy to reach by car via the SH38. From Himarë it took us about 4.5 hours, crossing the scenic Llogara Pass and then heading north along the coast.

Parking is possible at your hotel or for free just outside the bazaar.

You can also visit Krujë on a day trip from Tirana, which is ideal if you are staying in the capital and do not plan on driving yourself.

Is Krujë Fun With Kids?

Yes, surprisingly so. The bazaar is small and full of colorful stalls, our daughters loved browsing and checking everything out. The ice cream along the way was also a big hit.

As mentioned, we stayed at Hotel Panorama Kruje, and the rooftop pool was the highlight for the kids. Everything is walkable and there are no busy roads, which makes it an easy place to explore with children.

Final Thoughts: Is Krujë Worth a Stop on Your Albania Trip?

Krujë may not be a place where you spend days, but it is a unique and atmospheric stop on any trip through Albania. The mix of the old bazaar, the castle, and the views makes it well worth it. One night is enough, and it gives you the chance to enjoy this historic spot without the tourist buses around you.

With a good hotel, friendly people, and a touch of history, Krujë is the perfect stop on your way north, for example to Theth or the Shala-river (Lumi i Shales).
