Why exactly did we choose <strong>Exuma<\/strong>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many travelers choose <strong>Nassau (New Providence)<\/strong> or <strong>Grand Bahama<\/strong> because they are easy to reach and offer plenty of resorts and activities. wp-block-list\">\n<li>Largest selection of resorts, restaurants and entertainment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many family activities, including water parks and <strong>Atlantis Resort<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Affordable option for flights, lodging and public transportation in the Bahamas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"pk-list-negative wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mass tourism, busier beaches and lots of cruise ships, which can make it very crowded<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"pk-list-negative\">Not the pristine Bahamas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"grand-bahama\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grand Bahama<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"pk-list-positive wp-block-list\">\n<li>Easy to reach from Florida<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cheaper accommodations than Nassau (New id=\"why-great-little-exuma-is-the-winner-for-us\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Great &amp; Little Exuma is the winner for us<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For us, Exuma was exactly what we were looking for: white beaches, turquoise waters and no crowds of tourists.<\/strong> Instead of crowded resorts and busy hotspots, we found a relaxing island with deserted beaches and unique experiences, such as swimming with pigs and snorkeling with turtles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you prefer a large resort with lots of restaurants and entertainment options? <strong>Then Nassau is probably a better Bring some fruit and they&#8217;ll come right to you. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Snorkeling at Lee Stocking Island<\/strong><br>The water here is so clear that you can see the fish almost from the boat. As soon as you jump in, you swim among colorful coral and tropical fish. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay<\/strong><br>Exciting? Maybe a little. But these sharks are very calm and used to people, making it a truly unique experience.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hiking on a pristine sandbar<\/strong><br>On some tours, you&#8217;ll make a stop at a <strong>sandbar<\/strong>, a shallow patch of sand in the middle of the ocean. Here you are literally standing on a strip of white sand surrounded by turquoise water. A cool place to relax for a while and take great photos. The price, itinerary and quality of the experience can vary from operator to operator. These are three well-known providers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/exumawatersports.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Exuma Water Sports<\/a><\/strong><br>One of the <strong>top rated tour operators<\/strong> on Exuma, known for their <strong>professional organization and well-crafted excursions<\/strong>. They offer both <strong>half-day and full-day tours<\/strong>, with stops at familiar highlights such as swimming pigs, iguanas and nurse sharks. <strong>Hotel pickup is included<\/strong>, making it extra easy. Their boats are <strong>modern and well maintained<\/strong>, and the guides get high praise for their knowledge and enthusiasm. Prices are slightly higher than some other providers, but according to many reviews, the experience is <strong>worth every penny<\/strong>.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exumawatertours.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Four C&#8217;s Adventures<\/a><\/strong><br>In addition to boat tours, they also offer <strong>flights and combination tours<\/strong> that allow you to admire Exuma from the air. They are <strong>slightly more affordable than Exuma Water Sports<\/strong>, but slightly less well known and sometimes receive mixed reviews.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/coastlineadventuresexuma.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coastline Adventures<\/a><\/strong><br>A small-scale tour operator that focuses on <strong>private tours and itinerary flexibility<\/strong>.<br>They use smaller boats, which gives a more intimate experience, but they <strong>don&#8217;t offer regular half-day tours<\/strong>. If you want a shorter trip, you would need to book an expensive private option. For families with young children, a full-day tour can be a bit intense. tour full-day<\/strong>: luxurious experience, but also most expensive. From <strong>$2,800<\/strong> to <strong>$3,900<\/strong> <strong>per group<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Children under 3 can join for free<\/strong>, so for our youngest we didn&#8217;t have to pay. That was just as well, because she slept almost the entire tour. You&#8217;ll find beautiful beaches, clear water and a relaxed atmosphere. At <strong>Kahari Resort<\/strong> you can relax on the beach, while at <strong>Chat &#8216;N&#8217; Chill<\/strong> there is always something to do. Here you can <strong>feed stingrays<\/strong>, grab a bite to eat and experience the typical island vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"how-do-you-get-to-stocking-island\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you get to Stocking Island?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>We stayed at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/booking.tp.st\/I96oNmO9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Peace &amp; Plenty Resort<\/a><\/strong>, which has its own <strong>free shuttle service<\/strong> for guests. This allowed us to easily get to <strong>Kahari Resort<\/strong>, a small resort on Stocking Island. Here we had the beach <strong>all to ourselves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t have a hotel shuttle and still want to <strong>go to Stocking<\/strong> Island from <strong>Great Exuma<\/strong>? Then you can ask around in Georgetown for someone to transfer you. This may feel a little crazy, but that&#8217;s how it works here. They will call or get someone to take you to Stocking Island for a small fee. From sand banks full of sand dollars to spotting turtles in a turquoise bay, there is always a place that will surprise you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"pk-list-positive wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Find sand dollars at Cocoplum Beach<\/strong>: One of the best places to find sand dollars, especially during low tide. <strong>Guus and Nina<\/strong> went looking here together and found several. The shallow waters and sand banks make this a nice, quiet place to wander around.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Turtle spotting at Hooper&#8217;s Bay<\/strong>: This is the place on Exuma where you can <strong>see turtles up close<\/strong>. We saw one ourselves, but because of the rough sea, the water was murky and we didn&#8217;t really get to swim with it. We had seen videos of sharks swimming nearby beforehand, so we preferred to stay close to shore because of the murky water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Visit George Town and the Straw Market<\/strong>: George Town is small, but here you will find the famous <strong>Straw Market<\/strong>, a fun place to buy Bahamian souvenirs or handmade products. is <strong>Little Exuma<\/strong>, a small island that feels even more peaceful and pristine. Here it really is all about sun, sea and the most beautiful beaches, without big hotels or crowds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Personally, we found Little Exuma even more beautiful than Great Exuma<\/strong>. The beaches here are even more pristine, the water is crystal clear and it feels like you are on a private island. If you are looking for that real paradise vibe, this is the place to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"pk-list-positive wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tropic of Cancer Beach<\/strong>: If the stories are to be believed, this is the most beautiful beach in the Bahamas. The soft, white sand and clear blue water make it a real dream spot. It was high on our list, but we ended up sticking with Forbes Hill Beach. We absolutely did not regret that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Forbes Hill Beach<\/strong>: We were actually planning to also visit Tropic of Cancer Beach, but fell <strong>so in love with Forbes Hill Beach<\/strong> that we stayed there all day. Normally when traveling we try to see as much as we can, but here we really thought: <em>this is perfect, why go any further?<\/em> Maybe we missed out on the most beautiful beach in the Bahamas as a result, but for us, nothing could beat the atmosphere and feel of Forbes Hill. The islands are connected by a bridge, so you can simply drive there by car. The drive itself is already an experience. For multi-day rentals, this can go down to $200 per day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-best-accommodations-in-exuma-bahamas-from-luxury-resorts-to-boutique-hotels\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The best accommodations in Exuma, Bahamas: from luxury resorts to boutique hotels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sleeping on Exuma means waking up to <strong>turquoise waters at your doorstep<\/strong> and the <strong>ultimate island vibe<\/strong>. There are more than enough options: from <strong>chic resorts with infinity pools<\/strong> and <strong>cozy boutique hotels<\/strong> on secluded beaches to <strong>cheaper houses<\/strong> (with or without pools) you can rent. so, there is a suitable place for every type of traveler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But fair is fair: <strong>it&#8217;s not cheap<\/strong>. Exuma is not a backpacker destination. Prices for hotels and resorts are higher than on many other Caribbean islands. <strong>Still, traveling on a smaller budget is certainly possible.<\/strong> By choosing a <strong>guesthouse, Airbnb or simple accommodation in George Town<\/strong>, you can save quite a bit. Breakfast and other food and drinks were not included in the price. We ate at the restaurant regularly, but we honestly thought the food was <strong>mediocre<\/strong>. Luckily, they did fortunately have plenty of options, which was especially convenient for our oldest daughter who is a picky eater. The <strong>room<\/strong> and <strong>central location<\/strong> in George Town, on the other hand, were really top-notch. This is the <strong>dry season<\/strong>, with clear skies, pleasant temperatures and little rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We visited Exuma in <strong>November<\/strong>, which is <strong>just at the end of the hurricane season (June-November)<\/strong>. We rented a car in advance from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.exumacars.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thompson&#8217;s Car Rental<\/a><\/strong> near the airport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"pk-list-styled wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Driving on the left:<\/strong> In the Bahamas, people drive <strong>on the left<\/strong>, but rental cars are often imported from the US, so your steering wheel is on the left. It takes some getting used to!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Roads:<\/strong> Not all roads are well maintained; some beaches are <strong>accessible only by dirt roads<\/strong>. After rain, these roads can be full of deep puddles. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Driving after sunset:<\/strong> There are hardly any street lights and some locals drive with a drink. Both currencies have the same value. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bahamian dollars <strong>cannot<\/strong> be <strong>exchanged<\/strong> outside the Bahamas, so be sure to spend them before departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Credit cards are accepted in most places, but not everywhere. In <strong>hotel restaurants<\/strong>, for example, you can usually pay with your credit card, but <strong>in local restaurants<\/strong> cash is often preferred. Therefore, always have some cash with you for tips and smaller expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two ATMs in George Town:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"pk-list-styled wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>RBC Royal Bank<\/strong>: This ATM is inside a bank building and usually worked fine for us. We used this ATM several times without problems, but it does have frequent malfunctions. Therefore, always have some extra cash with you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scotiabank ATM<\/strong>: Do <strong>not withdraw money<\/strong> here. We got no money after withdrawing, but the amount of <strong>$200<\/strong> was debited from our account. It took us a lot of hassle afterwards to correct this with our bank.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"pk-alert pk-alert-success pk-alert-multiline\" role=\"alert\" >\n<p><b>Tip:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Make sure you have enough cash with you. You can pay with U.S. dollars everywhere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-bring-with-you-to-the-bahamas\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to bring with you to the Bahamas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We visited the Bahamas after traveling <strong>through Florida for three weeks<\/strong>. So we had quite a lot of luggage with us, we didn\u2019t take everything to the Bahamas. We left some of our luggage in Florida because we would return there after our trip to the Bahamas. This saved <strong>unnecessary dragging<\/strong> and extra costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We brought (swimming) clothes and toiletry bags for everyone and some additional supplies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"pk-list-positive wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sunscreen (reef-friendly)<\/strong>: The water is beautiful, but choose an <strong>eco-friendly sunscreen<\/strong> like <a href=\"https:\/\/partner.bol.com\/click\/click?p=2&amp;t=url&amp;s=1408269&amp;f=TXL&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bol.com%2Fnl%2Fnl%2Fp%2Fnaif-minerale-zonnebrandspray-voordeelset-spf50-2x100ml%2F9300000170155444%2F&amp;name=Na%C3%AFf%20-%20Minerale%20Zonnebrand%20Spray%20Voordeelset%20-...&amp;subid=Bahamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Na\u00eff<\/a> to protect the coral.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anti-insect repellent<\/strong>: Mosquitoes are there, but sand fleas<em>(no-see-ums<\/em>) can be more annoying. <strong>Marissa was bothered by them a lot, Guus not at all.<\/strong> Especially around sunset, a <strong>DEET-based spray<\/strong> is handy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Insect net<\/strong>: Ideal for the stroller or crib.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medicine<\/strong>: Pharmacies are scarce. id=\"what-does-a-vacation-to-exuma-bahamas-cost\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does a vacation to Exuma, Bahamas cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Exuma is not a cheap destination, but if you<strong> pay a little attention<\/strong> you can control some of the costs. Here&#8217;s a breakdown of what we spent during our <strong>6-day trip<\/strong> to Exuma in the Bahamas: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"airline-tickets\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Airline tickets<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>For our return flights to Exuma, we paid <strong>\u20ac1,137.55<\/strong> for <strong>2 adults and 1 child<\/strong>. Puck was not yet 2 years old and was therefore allowed <strong>on our lap for free<\/strong>. That definitely helped with the cost, but it is still a hefty expense for a flight to the Bahamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"hotels\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hotels<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>We stayed 5 nights at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/booking.tp.st\/I96oNmO9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Peace &amp; Plenty Resort<\/a><\/strong> for a total of <strong>\u20ac1,785<\/strong>. Breakfast was not included, so that was added on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to keep it a little cheaper? Then consider <strong>renting a cottage, apartment or guesthouse<\/strong>, which are available from about <strong>\u20ac150 per night<\/strong>. Just count on the quality often being basic.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"food-and-drink\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food and drink<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, we spent about <strong>\u20ac840<\/strong> on food and drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Breakfast was not included with the hotel, so we ate outside or at the hotel itself every morning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For lunch we usually bought something simple at the supermarket (bread, cookies, chips) and that saved in cost, but was still quite expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dinner we did do in restaurants. Prices here are higher than in The Netherlands, even at the supermarket.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"pk-alert pk-alert-success pk-alert-multiline\" role=\"alert\" >\n<p><b>Tip:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Fish and seafood are readily available locally and often cheaper than imported products.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"rental-car\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rental car<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>We rented a <strong>midsize sedan<\/strong> for <strong>6 days<\/strong> and paid <strong>\u20ac406<\/strong> total for this (about <strong>\u20ac67 per day<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gasoline cost us about <strong>\u20ac25<\/strong> for the whole trip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driving on Exuma is sometimes tricky: driving on the left, potholes in the road and hardly any street lights. I think this is fairly typical of driving in the Bahamas, though. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"pk-alert pk-alert-success pk-alert-multiline\" role=\"alert\" >\n<p><b>Tip:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Avoid driving after sunset due to the lack of lighting and some reckless local drivers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"excursions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Excursions<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The highlights of our trip was the boat ride:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tour with Exuma Water Sports to many of the Bahamas&#8217; remote islands, which included swimming with pigs, cost <strong>$440<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To this was added a tip of about <strong>\u20ac60<\/strong> (in the Bahamas a tip of <strong>15-20%<\/strong> is expected).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"unforeseen-costs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unforeseen costs<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, we had estimated most of the costs well and there were <strong>no real unforeseen expenses<\/strong>, except for the ATM incident. The beaches are <strong>breathtakingly beautiful<\/strong>, the water is <strong>crystal clear<\/strong> and you really get the <strong>ultimate island feeling<\/strong> here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For families, it is a <strong>relaxing, safe destination<\/strong>, but keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"pk-list-styled wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pricey hotels and restaurants<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Few amenities for young children<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Driving can be challenging (driving on the left, bad roads, few lights)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, we would love to <strong>go back again<\/strong>.
