Copenhagen might be our favorite city in Europe. It feels spacious, easy to navigate, clean and very relaxed. You notice right away that Danes know how to design a city for families. Playgrounds are everywhere, sidewalks are wide, museums are kid friendly, the beach is just a short metro ride away and of course there is Tivoli, the theme park right in the heart of the city.

Because of that, Copenhagen is an easy and fun destination when traveling with kids. But there is one thing you really want to think about first, where are you going to stay? The choice is huge, prices vary a lot and the best places can sell out quickly.

During our trips, both with and without kids, we stayed in different areas. Right in the city center and in quieter neighborhoods just outside of it. We bundled all those experiences for you here.

In this guide you will find our favorite family friendly hotels and apartments in Copenhagen, clearly organized by location and budget. From affordable options to places where you can really treat yourself. All of them are welcoming for families and located in areas where you instantly feel at home. Ready to read along?

The Best Family Friendly Hotels in and Around the Center of Copenhagen

When traveling with kids, location really matters. Staying in the true center of Copenhagen, around Tivoli Gardens, City Hall Square and Indre By, means you can do a lot on foot. Very convenient if you want to head back to your hotel for a break or when the kids need some downtime.

But do you really have to stay right in the center? Not at all. Copenhagen has one of the easiest and most efficient public transport systems in Europe. The metro is fast, clear and runs all day. Because of that, neighborhoods like Amager, Vesterbro and Østerbro feel very accessible. You are often in the heart of the city within ten to fifteen minutes. We stayed in Amager before and even though it is not walkable to the center, the metro makes everything feel close.

Since not every hotel in the city center offers family rooms, we selected the best options for families. These hotels are truly central, well connected by metro and feel practical and relaxed when traveling with kids.

The Most Family Friendly Apartments for Families in Copenhagen

Apartments are a great choice in Copenhagen, especially when traveling with kids. You get more space, often a separate bedroom and your own kitchen. That makes it easy to prepare breakfast or cook simple meals, which can save quite a bit of money in a city like Copenhagen. It also gives you more freedom and makes you feel less like a tourist and more like a local.

During our last trip we stayed at The Beach Gardens. We actually wanted to stay here for the whole trip, but we booked a bit too late. It looked so good that we decided to book at least the first nights here. For the final days we moved to a more budget friendly option outside the center. Looking back, we still wish we could have stayed here for the full week.

What Is the Best Area To Stay With Kids in Copenhagen?

Every neighborhood in Copenhagen has its own vibe. These are the areas we recommend most for families, plus what makes each one special.

  • City Center (Indre By)
Everything is close by, including Tivoli, Rundetaarn, Nyhavn, the harbor and many museums. Perfect for a first visit or if you like to explore mostly on foot. It is busier and usually more expensive to stay here.
  • Vesterbro
Creative, lively and full of great places to eat. You can easily walk to Kødbyen, playgrounds and the central station. A great choice with kids of all ages and for families who enjoy discovering new spots.
  • Østerbro
Calm, spacious and very family friendly. Plenty of playgrounds, close to the water and well located for attractions like The Little Mermaid, Kastellet and the Experimentarium, all reachable with a short bus or metro ride.
  • Amager
A residential area with a beach vibe. Close to Amager Strandpark, lots of playgrounds and fast metro connections to the city center. Perfect if you want to escape the crowds now and then.

How To Choose the Best Place To Stay in Copenhagen With Kids

The choice of places to stay in Copenhagen is large and prices can add up quickly. This checklist helps you pick the best option for your family.

  • Location, city center or something quieter?
Do you want to walk everywhere or do you prefer to return to a calm neighborhood after a busy day? Thanks to the metro, staying a bit further out is often no issue at all.
  • Space, is one room enough?
With young kids, a separate bedroom or extra living space is very nice to have. Apartments often offer a bit more freedom to move around.
  • Accessibility, is there a metro station nearby?
This is key in Copenhagen, especially if you stay outside the center. The metro is fast, clear and easy to use, even with kids. It makes areas like Amager or Østerbro just as practical as staying downtown.
  • Food, hotel breakfast or your own kitchen?
For families, a kitchenette can be a big plus. You do not have to eat out for every meal, which helps keep costs down.
  • Area, are there playgrounds or kid friendly cafes nearby?
Copenhagen is full of great playgrounds, but some neighborhoods like Østerbro and Amager really stand out.
  • Budget, expect higher prices but there are options
Copenhagen is a fantastic city to visit with kids, but hotel prices are higher than you might expect. Even basic rooms can become expensive during weekends or school holidays. That said, you can keep things affordable. Apartments with a kitchenette save money on breakfast and dinner, and neighborhoods just outside the center often offer much better deals without adding travel time.
  • Do not wait too long to book
Copenhagen is popular and the best family friendly hotels often sell out early, especially during holidays. The earlier you book, the better your chances of finding a good price and a comfortable room.
